I demonstrated creating a star trails photo in a +Landscape Photography Show  hangout on G+ recently, using the free StarStaX app: http://youtu.be/YWtkgD4ofMo?t=17m43s

Since mid-June a new version 0.60 of StarStaX has added a "comet" mode to show the direction of rotation of the stars, as shown below.

With all of the starry night photos +Vic Gundotra has been posting lately, surely it's only a matter of time before he tries star trails!
