This week the photo sharing site Flickr celebrated its 10th birthday. They've invited members to nominate ten of their favorite images shared there over the past 10 years. You can place your image in the #Flickr10 group on Flickr, and if you're lucky, perhaps Flickr will share your photos on their blog. They've gone through several redesigns over the years, and apparently image uploads are up 3X since their site redesign last May, so they seem to be on a positive course. For me Flickr serves a unique niche, with strong context assigned to each photo through tagging, mapping and group membership, which can be cross-referenced with ranking ("interestingness") so you can find the community-ranked best photos in searches for a given place, tag, or within a given thematic group. That's a powerful combination when planning a trip, so its surprising to me that other sites haven't chosen to pursue similar features. Photo buyers also use Flickr's strong image ranking functionality to help photo buyers find just the right image, so Flickr's option to sell licensed use of your photos through +Getty Images is another great feature. What photographer doesn't want the privilege of having their work published, and to have their passion to pay for more gear and go for more photo trips?
None of that is a knock against Google+ at all. I see them as two completely different and complimentary sites, suitable for different uses. Google+ is better for connecting with people using the Circles functionality which lets me group people by context I assign, and if they circle me back, I can publish to specific groups of people as well. Circles, Pages and Events have enabled me to organize quite a few G+ photowalks, and to schedule impromptu shoots with other photographers as well. Hangouts enable the interactive sharing of technique tips and recent work. Google constantly provides site refreshes as well. What do you think Google+ may be offering in 10 years?

Just in the last few days I found this feature to identify and connect with Facebook friends on Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/friends/facebook/
I found 924 Facebook friends as new contacts on Flickr, and I was able to add them all with one click.
In contrast, on G+ I've been maxed out at 5000 circle contacts since late 2011, so I have to drop contacts before adding new ones (current G+ circle management tools are woefully inadequate for the task). If the 5000 limit is absolutely necessary, it would be better to have much stronger circle analysis and management tools here on G+, to keep contact lists fresh and be able to engage better with people currently active on the site.

Man. When I was only 8 years old?! Time really flies. Soon enough we'll have cameras in our eyes and we'll be able to use our eyelids as the shutter. I think we'll still need a traditional camera for long exposures and time lapses though haha
