Jupiter, Mercury and Venus to form triangle tonight!

Apparently the equilateral triangle they'll form tonight is the closest together they'll be until 2021.  They'll only be 2 degrees apart, and best viewed around 9 pm tonight on the Western horizon (near where the sun went down), about 45 minutes after sunset (now on the U.S. East Coast).  They'll remain close together for a few more evenings.  This photo is from twilight last night, around 9 pm, as they set behind the Sierra Nevada (a horizon about 2.7 degrees high from this viewing position at Mono Lake).

UPDATE: I've posted the time-lapse and summarized my four nights of efforts to capture this event on my blog on +Blogger: http://activesole.blogspot.com/2013/05/venus-jupiter-mercury-conjunction-1080p.html

  1. No joy for those who do not care  ..

The thrill of those who have no patience ..

No paradise for those who do not blighted him ..

No comfort to those who do not fatigue him ..!!!

  2. For photographers on the U.S. West Coast, tonight they'll still be in an interesting and close configuration, with Mercury, Venus and Jupiter in a nearly-straight line, visible 30 to 60 minutes or so after sunset.  (I'm heading out shortly to set up.)
