Lori and I have lived in Nevada since 2010, and we love exploring our home state. The landscapes, dark night skies, and historic sites can be stunning.
In past years we’ve stayed in motels in historic towns and shot sites within a 45-60 minutes drive (each way). In 2026 we’ll emphasize Nevada’s spectacular geography and ecosystems, camping in remote sites so we can take full advantage of some of the darkest skies on the continent. We’ll start somewhere convenient to Las Vegas for folks flying in, and we’ll visit sites in Sothern to Central Nevada while temperatures are moderate, and wildflowers may be blooming. At this time of this writing (November 2025), we’ve had generous rains in September and November, setting the desert up for a healthy spring bloom.
We time our trips so we can enjoy rural Nevada’s spectacular dark skies at night. As a bonus, we often have interesting weather for landscape photography, and we frequently see wildlife such as antelope or burros and wild horses. If a spring is wet and we time a trip just right, we sometimes have widespread wildflowers.
We have a lot of itinerary flexibility. In 2026 we’re running more of an “adventure” trip and stay out in some stunning landscapes for extended dark sky night photography. Although we generally don’t go on roads requiring four wheel drive, high clearance and sturdy tires (with a full size spare) are recommended. If you have the option to bring an SUV, truck, or Jeep, that will definitely open up the most sites for visiting. Jeep rentals may be available. If you fly in, camping gear can be rented at REI in Las Vegas.
Our still photography and night sky time-lapse videos were used for the promotion of the passing Nevada’s SB52 Dark Skies Bill. Come see why we love the dark night skies of Nevada, over Nevada’s most interesting landscapes and foreground subjects! On our last night the Lyrid meteor shower will peak in the hours before dawn.
