Sources close to the company have confirmed that the price and availability of components had recently improved to the point where the company could ship in volumes appropriate for an Apple product:

Do you think the iBoard or iMat could be a reality? Haha. Not so sure. This image reminded me of +Mike Elgan piece that argues Apple won't and doesn't need to create any new "categories" of products: http://bit.ly/p4244J I don't think I agree with Mike that Jobs actually set out to be a "content appliance" company, or that they won't try other things, but it's a fascinating read none-the-less.
