Revisiting California's Big Sur Coast

I've been up and down the Big Sur coast many times in recent years researching locations to feature in my upcoming guide book.  Describing the locations of access points which may consist of nothing more than a makeshift trail can be a challenge, so I needed another lap to get the directions worked out.  Of course that also gave me the opportunity to scout out more lesser-known locations, so it was a busy trip.

Once +Lori Hibbett and I had the food shopping done, all that remained was a stop at +Turley Wines on the way to pick up the wine.  Turley is iN Templeton (not far from Paso Robles) and right on our way to where we can pick up Highway 1 along the coast at Cambria, so it's a regular stop on our way to Big Sur.  They were out of their classic Old Vines zinfandel and were a week from releasing the latest vintage of their Juvenile zinfandel which they pour and sell in their tasting room, but their 2010 Dusi zinfandel was stunning and we picked up a 2006 Library Vineyard petite sirah as well.  Dusi Ranch is where Ridge Vineyards sources the grapes for their Paso Robles zinfandel as well, and while I'll rarely trust most zinfandels to hold up well with age, I finished my last bottle of Ridge's 2005 this year and it was stellar.  Time and time again the old adage that great wines are more grown than made holds true, and both Ridge and Turley have done well maintaining access to some of the best vineyards in the state for several decades.

There are currently four active meteor showers which rise in the sky to the east each night in the hours after the sun sets.  Every night that I could see the sky I saw meteors.  I'll have some photos for you as I get through my images from the trip.
