Yosemite's Tioga Pass Road closed yesterday, but it will be in my dreams all winter long. If you have my guidebook "Photographing California Vol. 2 -South", you may recognize this location from page 42.
With Fall colors, the solar eclipse and the Orionid meteor shower all packed into October, not to mention wrapping up my guidebook, I haven't had much time to look at photos from our workshops in Bodie earlier this month, but here are a few.and I mostly stayed out of buildings so our customers could access 14 of them. We do run cameras during many of the night shots to monitor exposure and light painting effects.
We're done for the 2014 season after 6 sunset/night and 5 sunrise/interior access sessions. When the 2015 dates are available, we'll publish them here: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/

We like to offer night photography workshops with a variety of moonlight scenarios. Our latest October 4 access offered a mostly-full moon which reduces the number of visible stars, but the stronger lighting on the town enables shooting at lower ISO settings and smaller apertures. In this 30 second exposure I lit the headlights and gas pumps while one of my customers lit the truck bed and rear window.

A few more photos from my visits to Death Valley this year. See the whole album here on G+: https://plus.google.com/b/116469806647181209109/photos/116469806647181209109/albums/6010124205375557457
This is another shot from a visit to Bodie last August which I've revisited to create a more complete edit. The sky was too light with a bright, 90% full moon coming up, so I darkened it to make the stars show up better.

Wheaton and Hollis Hotel
An old truck is given new life in the ghost town of Bodie State Historic Park, California. This was taken at 9:30 pm on August 24 last year. We'll be back again on August 30 this year, when the moon will be a 17% crescent gently illuminating the town until it drops behind the nearby hills around 9:45 pm. Then we'll enjoy dark, starry skies for stunning Milky Way shots until we depart at 1 am. That many weeks after the summer solstice, we'll have have a lot more time for night shooting than we would during the longer days closer to late June.
We'll have other Bodie workshop dates available in 2014 as well. Check my blog for details: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/

Combined Night & Interior Access Sessions
On October 12 and 13 we shot in the park from 6pm – 1 am for night shots, then returned from 6 am – noon the next morning for interior access. We paid for a second monitor for the interior session so we could have two buildings open at all times. We were able to get most people through 9 buildings: the Boone General Store, Lottie Johl House, Sam Leon Bar and barber shop, Wheaton & Hollis Hotel, Bodie Schoolhouse, Morgue, the Standard Mill, the IOOF Hall, and the Dechambeau Hotel!
We're working on confirming dates for our workshops in 2014:
Death Valley's Badwater salt flats at sunset one evening last week. Water passes over all the time, but on average only 1.9 inches of rain fall on Furnace Creek each year.
I'm really enjoying the shots I've been getting in Death Valley lately, and with it just down the road, I'm considering returning to the park around Dec 14-18, maybe once or twice in January as well…

It looks like I may return to the park Dec 21 – 22…
I decided to put several of my photos from this spot into one album, so I can decide which composition, moon illumination, and post-processing treatment I like best so far. It takes longer to take night photos, and we're not up all night every night, so we take fewer of them. So I always have more places to shoot at night than I have time to shoot them, and I rarely get back to the same spot over and over.
The wild west "ghost town" of Bodie is an exception. I have so many more shots to take there, but I always manage to catch another photo of the church. It actually changes every night, with the moon illumination changing from night to night.
Here's the rest of the album containing more photos of this building form the 1880s:
