South Tufa Milky Way Panorama

Before my June 4/5 Bodie workshops I held a short Eastern Sierra workshop to show some of my customers some additional locations. One of the places we went was Mono Lake, to catch the Milky Way rising over the calcium carbonate tufa formations.

June Milky Way Over Bodie Church

I completed my second Bodie night photography workshop of the year June 27. I just added a sixth date, September 17, as July 29, August 28 and October 1 became sufficiently full.

Departing Clouds in Bodie

In the summer, the Eastern Sierra often has afternoon thunderstorms, driven by heat and monsoon moisture. Fortunately once the "engine" for the convection, the heat of the sun, goes away, the clouds tend to break up and/or drift eastward, leaving a stunningly clear view of starry skies.

I live not far from the authentic Wild West “ghost town” of Bodie State Historic Park, so each summer I lead five night photography workshops there.

Light Painting

During one of our night sessions in Bodie back in 2014 I tried whipping "El wire" around for a few frames to see if I could make a "smoke" effect. The technique needs some adjustment on the exposure and post-processing sides, but it was a fun experiment.

Our Bodie night photography workshops are more than 3/4 full for 2016; registration for three of our five dates has been closed. The main remaining dates are July 29 and August 28: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/
Those two dates were chosen to be adjacent to nights when the park will let visitors stay in the park until 10 pm, so although those nights will of course be more crowded, at least you can get some extra sunset and twilight time in the park.

When they're gone, they're gone, but we practice night photography in our other workshops as well: www.JeffSullivanPhotography.com.

Why Are Meteors More Frequent After midnight?

In short, where you are on earth rotates around to the front of the Earth’s path through space at midnight, so the sky above you collides with more comet dust from then until astronomical twilight starts before dawn, as this article in Bay Nature Magazine, featuring one of my meteor shower photos, explains: Ask the Naturalist: What’s the Best Time and Place to See Meteors?

I’ve met other photographers who seem confused about why I show up until 11 pm to start shooting at midnight, so I’ve also updated one of my tutorial blog posts to include that suggestion: How to Create a Time-lapse Video of a Meteor Shower

Thank you to +BayNatureInstitute for licensing my photo for your article!

Death Valley Wildflower Workshop This Week

Ashford Mill to Jubilee Pass
With modest enrollment, the participants have elected to make this a camping-based trip, so we can stay closer to where we want to shoot, and pursue night shots as well.  We’ll also have the flexibility to follow the latest wildflower reports, the unfolding weather, and the discoveries we make along the way.

Desert Gold February 2016This is probably the best wildflower season in the last decade, with the added bonus of water on Badwater salt flats (as of a couple of days ago) for sunrise reflections.  I just passed through the park 2 weeks ago and I’ve been following updated wildflower reports, so I have a good idea from those and from past years where to go.

When we get tired of wildflowers and Badwater reflections, if that’s possible, they want me to show them a slot canyon and sand dunes that most park visitors don’t visit or see.  We’ll pursue a little night photography as well, and I have some good ideas on what we might want to do for that.
Temporary Inland Sea

This Spring in Death Valley album shows approximately what we might cover this week, with the most relevant being the first 50-60, up to the red fire truck and red Fiat: https://plus.google.com/photos/107459220492917008623/albums/5831194499079947137

Dune Lines

Although we’ll be camping, we’ll often be only 30 to 60 minuted from Furnace Creek or Shoshone to access a meal or shower.  We’ll have camp stoves for some meals and I’ll bring wood, steaks, etc. and cook over a fire Tuesday or Wednesday night.

It’s going to be a fun week!

Bodie Night Photography Workshops 2016

It’s time to kick off another year of night photography workshops in Bodie!  My June 27 workshop in Bodie is full.  The remaining  Bodie workshop dates are filling fast :

Saturday June 4 – night photography workshop: Milky Way, star trails, light painting, 6 pm – 1 am
Sunday June 5 – morning / interior access

June 27 – *FULL*

Friday, July 29 – night photography workshop: Milky Way, star trails, light painting, 6 pm – 1 am
(the night before the Saturday, July 30 Ghost Stories night).

Sunday August 28 – night photography workshop: Milky Way, star trails, light painting, 6 pm – 1 am (the night after after the Saturday, August 27 Ghost Stories night).

Saturday October 1 – morning / interior access
Saturday October 1 – night photography workshop: Milky Way, star trails, light painting, 6 pm – 1 am

We have four nights and two interior access sessions with space remaining.  Two of our Bodie nights are timed to be the night before or after a Bodie “Ghost Stories” night, when the park lets anyone stay until 10 pm with regular park admission.  That doesn’t give visitors much more than sunset and twilight in the long days of summer, but it’s still after-hours access, a perfect practice session before our August 28 workshop or following our July 29 workshop. The sun and stars move south to north over the course of the summer, and the Milky Way rises earlier and moves southeast to southwest from month to month.  This changes the compositions available. I’ve shot in Bodie at night multiple times in each month in recent years, so I have a lot of experience and composition knowledge to draw from in order to help you move efficiently around the park from shot to shot.

A discussion of the characteristics of the various dates appears on the Bodie workshop page on my new blog: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/bodie-night-photography-workshops/
Registration is there too: the workshops currently open for enrollment have the payment/registration linked to the price net to the description.

I’ll place some examples below.  For a lot more, see nearly 400 of my Bodie photos in this album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffreysullivan/albums/72157630926160354

Yosemite Moonbow Season Starts Soon!

I retried this lunar rainbow post as a fresh upload to my G+ Page, and that worked a lot better:

Originally shared by +Jeff Sullivan Photography
Yosemite Moonbow Season Starts in April!
After catching the setting sun’s light on Horsetail Fall this month, I can’t wait for the next big annual astronomical event in Yosemite: moonbows in the mist of Yosemite’s waterfalls. These night rainbows happen at certain times on certain nights based on the position of the moon in the sky relative to your viewing position. The moon moves a lot from night to night, so the time you’ll catch them in a given waterfall changes every night.

This year the moonbows should be the strongest they’ve been in recent years, due to the El Nino weather pattern bringing us a healthy snowpack in the Sierra Nevada. The main months to capture the moonbows are April and May, although they can continue in June in many waterfalls if their flow stays healthy. IF you’d like to try for them with me in April, I’ll be showing photographers around the park’s amazing landscape, capturing wildflowers and practicing night photography to take advantage of this rare opportunity in this particularly strong year: http://www.jeffsullivanphotography.com/blog/yosemite-national-park-photography-workshops/

At the end of April we should catch the end of the season for California poppies, perhaps the start of the season for dogwood trees blooming, and we may get a late spring storm to enhance sunset and sunrise, and decorate the park with a light dusting of snow. It’s one of my favorite times of the year to explore Yosemite, and you can see why in this album:
