Photobombed by an F-18

An F-18 photobombs campers in Death Valley National Park Tuesday morning. The first one which passes by gets your attention, the second one comes at you from behind at close to the speed of sound, so you won't hear it coming!

Mojave National Preserve, California

It's the time of year when the desert landscapes in Mojave National Preserve become comfortable to access again.

Winds of Change

High winds sculpt sand dunes in Southern California.  Untracked scenes like this are available in pretty much every sand dune field in California provided that you walk far enough.  It's the classic situation where the path to success is through hard work, and you earn the results.  A mile is usually more than far enough to go, but walking two miles round trip in sand is tough work, so don't attempt it on a hot day and carry much more water than you think you'll need.

Winds of change in the sand dunes. Pristine sand like this is available in just about any sand dune fiedl if you simply earn it, and walk far enough. A mile is usually enough, but that’s a long way to go in the sand, so don’t try it on a hot day, and carry lots of water.

Postcards from the Mojave

Sand dunes, salt flats, jagged peaks, lava fields, cactus gardens and wildflowers, there's a lot of diversity to the geography and biology of the Mojave Desert.  Here are a few photos from my lap of the California desert to discover new locations there last week.

Dust Storm in Death Valley

I like how we can just barely make out the highest ridge up towards the top. Nice that the worst of the dust wasn't on the side of the valley we were on… that dust apparently blew away long ago.

My Death Valley album on G+ was getting too large, so I've created a Death Valley 2011 album:

Sunset at Kelso Dunes (200mm)

This is the 200mm version of the prior 24mm wide angle shot I just posted.  They each give your audience a totally different feel for the same sunset.

Sunset at Kelso Dunes (24mm)

Sunset at Kelso Dunes, Mojave National Preserve, California.  Although wide angle lenses are often great for landscape photography, sometimes they don't make the most out of hte conditions you are experiencing.  Look around the scene for details to focus on.

For example, what would you like to direct attention to here?  I'll post the 200mm version of this scene as well for comparison.

Mojave Layers

Sunset over the Mojave National Preserve, January 2009.
The Mojave National Preserve was formed in 1994, and even after 20 years, relatively few photographers have explored its 1.6 million acres.

New Mojave Desert Album

I've created an album for some of my  photos from the Mojave Desert as I plan a trip there in a few weeks.  These are mostly, but not all, from Southern California.  Enjoy!
