Comet Lovejoy, above and to the right of Orion

If you're familiar with the constellation Orion, shown in this picture, Comet Lovejoy (the blue-green fuzzy dot with faint white tail) can be found above and to the right of Orion over the next week or two. Comet Lovejoy will move up in the sky a bit more each night.

This photo of Comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy was captured two nights ago facing the eastern horizon at 7:21 pm, January 7, 2014. It's a vertical crop from a landscape orientation shot captured at a wide 24 mm focal length.

  1. +Jeff Bond That's not actually my EXIF, don't know how f/16 would have gotten in there… I shot this at f/4. And for the exposure time, I actually shot at 8, 15 and 30 seconds, then used +Adobe Photoshop Lightroom and Photomatix HDR software to see if that help the tail stand out better. It actually helped dim the stars other than Orion, so I used the HDR result for this post to show Orion's position.

  2. +Donna McClure I didn't go out last night, now it's cloudy. I may have to wait a few more nights to get another break in the clouds. Hopefully that will give the comet some time to brighten up as it approaches the sun (even though it's moving away from earth).
