Have they ever figured out what causes the stones to move?
Yes! Has to do with mountain peaks and this the strech of land being like a wind tunnel. Water seeping from the earth causing a layer of ice and then causing the rocks to slide across the l land. Something like that.

Yup, saw a small pond there back in 2012, but figured water and ice are factors in this

This is obviously a desert when he called the valley of death. Indeed landscape is not only good looks to visit him. No grass or trees.
