I like most creatures, but not in my bed! I found this scorpion in my vehicle while I was out camping Friday night, right before I was going to sleep in the back. The scorpion was right where me feet would be. I probably picked it up when I set my camera backpack on the ground, so I probably carried it around for a while!

I can't tell how large it is from the photo, but (if it was small) it looks like the bark scorpions we have around Arizona. Scorpions are both more aggressive and have worse stings as they get smaller. However, so long as you're healthy (and not a child or very old), the sting will have very short-term effects — pain for a day or two and maybe some numbness for up to a week. There are certainly worse critters.
+Jim Sharp Yes, I picked up the duffel bag it was on and knocked it off on the the ground. I made sure it was walking in a straight line away, so it wouldn't come back and get under (or onto) my shoes. Of course that was all after my first reaction: getting out my phone to take a picture!
+Ted Pavlic that is exactly what I thought it was. We have those in the Sierra wilderness as well
+Ted Pavlic It was about 2" long fully stretched out. I was pretty allergic to bee stings the last time I was stung, so rather than test the extent of the list of what I might have a reaction to, I try not to get stung.
After living in west africa for a bit, I still make a habit of shaking out my shoes even though there are no scorpions here.

Most of them have a sting that's no more harmful than a bee or a wasp.

Scorpions use stinger for stunning their food. They find humans distasteful. Laying on them my get a sting, about like a bee sting.

+Ervin Ruhe I found this one at Bodie State Historic Park in the Eastern Sierra region of California, at an elevation of 8375 feet. The other ones I've found in the Eastern Sierra were at Grandview Campgroundin the White mountains at 9000 feet in elevation, and in the Inyo Moutains at 6000 feet. I've found scorpions in the mountains above Napa Valley as well.

Snakes, scorpions, and spiders always show up in terrible places. i'm always very careful when spending time in their homes.
Ugh, I found one of those in my room a few days ago while on vacation. Glad that my kids or me did not step on it.

A portable UV light will help you spot them easily in low light conditions, they glow when exposed to it. Very handy to have such a light in such areas.

To such a small scorpion, even a human being innocently laying atop is considered threatening.
It would sting in self defense, which would be perceived by us as an attack.
I've been stung a few times. It's not fun.

Up north in Canada, near Vancouver, we have pseudo scorpions, but they are becoming rare due to overuse of pesticides.
