Sunset over Smith Valley

I've been busy in the past month shooting in Bodie several times, Yosemite, Death Valley, and Nevada, pursuing subjects like wildflowers, old buildings and rusty mining artifacts, lunar rainbows, the Milky Way and the Camelopardalid meteor shower.  Occasionally the weather calls me outside to pursue clouds and sunset.  This was a spur of the moment opportunity to chase some clouds at sunset over nearby Smith Valley, Nevada.  It had rained earlier in the day, so the unpaved roads required to reach this spot were soft and slick.  +Lori Hibbett and I barely made it out as clay mud caked onto my SUV's tires.

  1. We've driven roads like that. Fun, eh +Jeff Sullivan ! I think we've actually had worse times with sand and playa silt than mud, which means had you asked me some 40 years ago to make the bet between the two for the years to come at that point, I would have lost. I've only "almost" been stuck in clay mud (once, near Black Diamond Mines/Clayton in the East Bay Area, in an old Willies Jeep Stationwagon), while I did manage to get an old Honda stuck in Mono Basin – on the hill south of the LV Mobile Station, as well as three other "almosts")

    Nice shot! Love the sky!!!!!

  2. Jeff thank you for bringing a piece of California to this California girl now living in Wisconsin. My ex and I would load up the kids and head to Death Valley for a fun day and ice cream. We only lived 100 miles west of there.
